What is a hearing age test?
It finds the highest frequency (pitch) your ears can still detect and maps that ceiling to a typical age range. Our ability to hear very high frequencies fades with age — a phenomenon called presbycusis — so your ceiling is a rough proxy for how "young" your ears are.
How accurate is an online hearing age test?
It is a fun demonstration, not a medical exam. Results depend heavily on your speakers or headphones, your volume, and background noise — cheap laptop speakers often cannot reproduce tones above 16 kHz at all. Use good headphones in a quiet room for the closest result, and see an audiologist for a real assessment.
Why can children hear higher frequencies than adults?
The hair cells in the inner ear that pick up the highest pitches are the first to wear down from age and noise exposure. Most people under 18 can hear up to ~20 kHz; by 40 the ceiling has usually dropped to about 15–16 kHz, and it keeps falling from there.
Is it safe?
Yes. The tones are quiet and brief, and you control them by holding a button. Do not crank your volume to force a result — if a pitch is inaudible at a comfortable level, that is exactly the finding.
